The Edible Landscape Gardens Project is about to end it's implementation stages and commence a new phase to become a food ecology interpretive garden by 2026. Interpretive centres are informal education sites designed to allow the public to better understand the natural or cultural heritage of the site.

A video pitch was presented to Gold Coast City Council, proposing a Food Ecology Interpretive Centre. We understand that our proposal influences the inclusion of a ‘Horticulture Precinct’ on the north side of the Parklands. We are impatient to know its details and whether or not there is a role for Ediblescapes.

Ediblescapes volunteers have installed interpretive labels with interactive QR codes linking to further information on the garden website.

EdibleScapes is an ecological treasure trove cultivating an edible food forest garden for communities to enjoy. Situated in the foothills of the Gold Coast hinterland at the Country Paradise Parklands, this unique site is designed to inspire, educate, and respond to the call for a Food and Ecology Interpretative Centre.

EdibleScapes is a volunteer-driven organisation that services local communities with experiential organic fruit and vegetables and provides opportunities to learn about and participate in ecologically sustainable urban food culture.

The bio-intensive bed built in the forest garden is one-off double deep 60cm loose soil that incorporates (in our case 30%) composted and fermented organic matter soil.

Our COVID-19 response and achievements

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, EdibleScapes harvested 35 times and delivered approximately 5200 litres (1500 kilograms) of fresh produce to Nerang Food Bank. This we grew in 400m2 of garden beds, achieving productivity of about 4kg per m2 of garden for the year.  

This was only possible by employing biointensive growing methods, onsite production of organic solid and liquid biofertilisers, and the contribution of our volunteers; casual volunteers to gardening and composting work in the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic and 24 participants in the Edible Garden Promoter program since July 2020.

Edible Gardens

Permanent, open access food and medicinal herb gardens for the purpose of community learning and demonstration.

organic fertilisers

Chemical-free fertilisers and composts to feed our soil, plants and fruit trees, developed using organic waste from the local community.

Organic Food

Harvested food delivered to the local emergency food bank to give vulnerable people better access to nutrient-rich, fresh food.

Some of Our Priorities

The principal services of EdibleScapes are developing Public Edible Landscape Gardens, Community Composting and community education programs on urban food ecology.

Edible Gardens & Community Composting

Allowing experimentation to learn from doing, and allowing volunteer participation. Also, it permits experimentation with edible communal models while a permanent food forest garden is growing.

Social and ecological

Through public workshops and garden events, the wider community can be exposed to information and training in the ecological cultivation of vegetables and medicinal plants and spices.

ECOLOGICAL ART

Ecological relationships, creatively proposing new possibilities for coexistence, sustainability, and healing.

SURFood

(Sustainable Urban Food) to acquire appropriate local food growing knowledge and adapt food technology to the local urban context. Cooperate, research, experiment and communicate food ecological knowledge.

Social Enterprise

(Community based-social enterprise owned by Ediblescapes Inc)
Trading in food ecology and sustainable food grown biofertiliser products and services. A means of self-help and creating resources to establish and maintain public or semi-public edible gardens.

Our mission is to support, promote and provide education about community based, ecologically sustainable food production and distribution. We acknowledge the Kombumerri people that are the Traditional Custodians of this land on which we grow food and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
